Wong's Dojo - Wahgunyah is a traditional Okinawa karate and kobudo sports club located in Indigo Shire, Australia. With over 30 years of experience, Wong's Dojo offers a safe, friendly, and supportive environment for individuals who are interested in learning traditional karate or kobudo.
At the hombu dojo, Wong's Dojo conducts separate classes for children and adults, ensuring targeted nurturing tuition for all students. Here, participants have the opportunity to learn Ikemiyagi Goju Ryu Meibukan Karate of Kaicho Ikemiyagi Masaaki and the Koburyu Kobudo of Kaicho Takashi Kinjo. Individuals can choose to participate in either karate, kobudo, or both, as these two martial arts are regarded as brother and sister by the Okinawan martial artists.
Karate and kobudo training at Wong's Dojo offer numerous benefits, including improved physical conditioning, coordination, flexibility, focus, and concentration. Additionally, it helps build and reinforce discipline, respect, and self-confidence. Regular attendance at training sessions is seen as the first display of discipline and respect.
The head instructor, founder, and owner of Wong's Dojo is Kancho Wong. He holds the rank of hachi dan (8th dan) in Meibukan Goju Ryu and kyuu dan (9th dan) in Koburyu Kobudo Kobukai. Kancho Wong is the longest-serving Meibukan Goju Ryu representative in Australia and is also the head of Koburyu Kobudo Kobukai Australia. He has trained with prominent figures such as Dai Sensei Meitoku Yagi, the founder of Meibukan Goju Ryu, and Sensei Matayoshi Shinpo, a senior student of Sensei Chojun Miyagi.
For those interested in karate, Wong's Dojo trains in Ikemiyagi Ryu, which is the Okinawa Goju Ryu Meibukan karate style developed by Kaicho Ikemiyagi Masaaki, who was a senior student of Dai Sensei Metoku Yagi. As an ACTIVE KIDS PROVIDER registered with ServicesNSW, the hombu kids' classes offer a valuable opportunity for children.
Kobudo, on the other hand, focuses on the art of weaponry, specifically those that can be adapted or fashioned from everyday items. Its development in Okinawa has historical significance, including prohibitions on weapon possession during certain periods. At Wong's Dojo, kobudo training is based on the teachings of Kaicho Takashi Kinjo, the founder of Koburyu Karate (Ueichi Ryu) and kobudo.
Kancho Wong's commitment to continuous learning is evident through his annual trips to Okinawa to train with his karate and kobudo masters. Wong's Dojo encourages students to join these trips to experience training with some of Okinawa's most senior karate and kobudo masters in the birthplace of karate.
