Wullundigong Orienteers of the West, also known as WOW, is a well-established orienteering club located in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia. The club was formed in the 1970s and has since become an integral part of the local orienteering community.
The name “Wullundigong” is derived from an aboriginal word meaning “a little man of the forest. ” Despite the name, the club welcomes members of all genders and sizes who have an interest in orienteering. WOW's main purpose is to organise events and provide a supportive and social environment for members to improve their orienteering skills.
WOW has a strong presence in interclub competitions and takes great pride in representing the club's colours at both interstate and overseas events. Club shirts can be arranged for members of all ages at a reasonable cost, and interested individuals are encouraged to reach out to the Convenor for more information.
After most events, WOW members gather under the club banner for a chat and picnic, fostering a sense of camaraderie among the participants.
The club is fortunate to have dedicated individuals fulfilling important roles within the organisation. The Convenor, Carol Brownlie, oversees club operations, while Technical Dan Greig provides valuable expertise in orienteering techniques. Sue Greig and Anne Austin serve as Social Convenors, ensuring that members have opportunities to engage in social events and activities.
WOW's upcoming events include the MetrO 1 at Koondoola Bushland on November 11, 2023, and the Albany-Town Centre event on November 12, 2023. These events, along with others, offer a chance for members to test their skills and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Perth.
As a club, WOW is dedicated to promoting the sport of orienteering and supporting its members in their pursuit of excellence. The club embraces the rich Aboriginal heritage of the land it operates on and acknowledges the Noongar people as the Traditional Custodians of the area.
