Welcome to the Official Website of Abronhill Bowling Club, located in Moss Road, Abronhill, Cumbernauld, G67 3NB. This friendly and welcoming club has a long and rich history, dating back to its founding in 1985. The club was established by a group of enthusiastic local people who shared a dream of having their own bowling club in the area.
The original Directors of the club were Ralph Deery, Ernie Steel, Jimmy McNeill, and George Martin. In the same year of its establishment, the club sought and was granted membership of the Kirkintilloch and District Bowling Association. From the beginning, the club aimed to provide equal opportunities for bowlers of all genders and ages, with Gents being full voting members and ladies being associate members.
As the club grew and developed, the ladies' voice within the club became stronger, with the appointment of Nan Grant as the first ever Ladies Representative on the Committee. The members quickly honed their bowling skills, and the club saw its first major success in 1986 when Helen Leamy became the first ever Ladies Champion, winning the Inter District Singles Championship.
The committee and members were not only focused on their bowling skills but also on improving the facilities of the club. In 1987, a small extension was built to provide the club with a bar, and a bar licence was granted. This marked another milestone in the club's progress. Additionally, the club established a junior section, which proved successful with Kristine Lusk winning the SWBA District Junior Singles in 1993.
The club's achievements continued to grow, and in 1988, Joe Wilson brought the club its first Scottish Bowling Association honour when he won the District Singles Championship. Bowling holidays soon became a part of the club's activities, with members representing Abronhill Bowling Club in its first ever European game against Princessa Bowls Centre in Benidorm.
By the time the club celebrated its 10th anniversary in 1995, it had established itself as a well-respected club. The club took over ownership and running of the greens from the local council in 1992, with Drew Parker, the club secretary at the time, leading the changes required. The club's profile was further enhanced in 1997 when Jimmy McNeill became president of the Kirkintilloch and District Bowling Association, and the club hosted the Association Finals during his tenure.
Throughout its history, Abronhill Bowling Club has been dedicated to fostering a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all members, regardless of age or gender. The club is always happy to welcome new members, with equal bowling and voting rights extended to all members. Membership fees vary depending on age, with juniors able to join from age 8 with a small fee and full coaching provided by qualified SBA coaches.
