Afonso School of Performing Arts

Welcome to the Afonso School of Performing Arts! Located in Berkhamsted, our local, family-run school offers dance and musical theatre classes for children aged 2–16 years. Since our establishment in 2014, we have gained a reputation for providing a friendly and nurturing environment for all students.

At the Afonso School of Performing Arts, we aim to create a fun and disciplined environment where students can develop their skills in dance, acting, and singing. Our dedicated team, who have both teaching and industry experience, are passionate about providing exciting and inspiring lessons that help children learn skills for life.

One unique aspect of our school is that our core classes, including ballet, tap, modern jazz, and musical theatre, are scheduled in one session. This makes it more convenient for your child to take multiple classes and explore different styles of performing arts.

Our school is run by husband and wife team Alicia and Ricardo Afonso, both West End professionals with an impressive list of credits including We Will Rock You, Chicago, Top Hat, Jesus Christ Superstar, and BBC1's The Voice UK. As parents themselves, Alicia and Ricardo understand the importance of seeing your child happy and progressing. That's why we offer regular performances and presentations throughout the year, so parents can see their child's growth and development.

We pride ourselves on offering structured and rewarding classes. The Afonso School of Performing Arts follows the IDTA syllabus in ballet, tap, modern jazz, and musical theatre. We are proud to say that we have a 100% pass rate for our IDTA and LAMDA examinations, with the majority of our students achieving Distinction/Honours. Our principal, Alicia Afonso, is a fully qualified dance teacher and a Fellowship member of the IDTA, a leading professional body in the dance industry.

Our co-director, Ricardo Afonso, is a leading man in the West End and also a talented singer in the band The Deccan Traps. With his experience and expertise, we aim to produce strong, all-round performers and build a reputation for getting the best out of our students.
