About

The Meersbrook Park Bowling Club recently held their 2023 AGM on November 20th at The White. With 28 members in attendance, the atmosphere was full of celebration and excitement as they reflected on an incredible year for the club.

At the meeting, Terry Eggington, who has been bowling at the club with his family for over 80 years, emotionally expressed his gratitude and relief that the club had been saved from potential closure. He highlighted the influx of new life, energy, and ideas that had revitalised the club.

Jim Szemeti provided a progress report on the lower green, expressing his thanks to the dedicated volunteers who had helped with the mowing and gardening. He also acknowledged Turner Plant Hire for generously loaning equipment to the club.

The incoming Treasurer, Alex Westran, presented a comprehensive financial report, showcasing the club's healthy finances. He also outlined measures that would ensure transparency and security in transactions for the upcoming year. The club had managed to raise over £5000 through crowdfunding and sponsorship from Premier Community. Additionally, a grant from Yorkshire Sport had been instrumental in offering free Taster sessions to attract new members.

Membership Fees were set at £40, ensuring accessibility for all interested players. Terry, who had captained all three teams, provided a detailed season report. Despite the team's inexperience, they achieved unexpected success. The Works Doubles Team emerged as winners in their division, while the Tuesday Evening team miraculously avoided relegation in the highly competitive Hallamshire League.

Decisions regarding which teams to enter in 2024 would need to be made early in the year. However, the club aims to create a welcoming atmosphere, encouraging players of all skill levels to participate. Assurances were given that players of all standards played for all teams in the Social and Works leagues.

The club expressed their immense gratitude towards the South Yorkshire County Crown Green Bowling Association, particularly for the support they received. Steve Hawksworth, the Association Development Worker, provided free coaching sessions and traveled voluntarily from Penistone on multiple occasions to assist the club.

Tom Rhodes, the new Chair, presented proposed changes to the club's constitution that would enable better governance and support the club's aspirations for future development. The proposals were unanimously endorsed, and the new committee was elected.

With a sense of positivity and promise for the year ahead, the meeting was adjourned. The Meersbrook Park Bowling Club is excited for what the future holds and looks forward to welcoming interested players to their upcoming events.
