Maida Aikido Club, a proud member of the Aikido Fellowship of Great Britain, is bringing the exciting world of Mixed Martial Arts to Aldershot! This local MMA event is set to be an absolute thrill for both fighters and spectators alike.
Founded by Sensei Ralph Reynolds back in 1963, the AFGB has been at the forefront of Aikido in the United Kingdom for decades. Sensei Reynolds, who studied under the tutelage of Sensei K Abbe and Sensei M Nakazono, was the pioneer who first introduced Aikido to the West Midlands. His legacy lives on through the dedicated efforts of the association.
After Sensei Reynolds' passing in 2006, the AFGB faced its fair share of challenges. However, under the leadership of Hanshi Jayne Phelps, the association persevered and continued to champion the practice of Aikido. Unfortunately, the unforeseen impact of Covid-19 and subsequent lockdowns posed new obstacles for the association.
In 2022, the AFGB entrusted the future of the association to Sensei Dominic Foster, an experienced Aikido practitioner with a deep commitment to carrying on Shihan Reynolds' teachings. Since 1980, Sensei Foster has dedicated his life to the study and practice of Aikido. Alongside the AFGB Executive Committee members and Yudanshakai, Sensei Foster volunteers his time and effort to ensure the smooth operation of the association.
The AFGB headquarters has now found its new home in Fleet, Hampshire, following the closure of the main club in Birmingham. However, the future looks promising, as the association plans to open another club in the West Midlands once the financial crisis subsides, and it becomes viable. This expansion will allow even more individuals to experience the grace and power of Aikido.
