Alberta Downs is a horse riding field located in Lacombe, Alberta, Canada. With over 50 years of experience in the horse racing industry, Alberta Downs offers a state-of-the-art facility for thoroughbred, quarter horse, and harness racing entertainment. The field boasts a 1 Mile dirt track and 7/8 Turf track, making it the only one of its kind in western Canada.
The founder of Alberta Downs, Robert O. Allen, has a rich history in the horse racing and entertainment industry. With a 50-year career, Robert Allen has owned and operated various businesses, including Happy Valley Recreations in Calgary, Alberta. Happy Valley featured an 18-hole golf course, an amusement area, an Olympic-size indoor swimming pool, and a 1000-stall RV and tenting park.
Alberta Downs constructed its first racetrack in Calgary in 1981 and later sold it in 1998 for a housing and golf course development.
In 2066, Alberta Downs started a new racetrack operation in Lacombe, Alberta, featuring a 1-mile dirt track and the only turf track in western Canada. This unique setup allows Alberta Downs to host both Thoroughbred and Harness races on the same card, providing an exciting and versatile racing experience for fans and participants alike.
