Algester Walkers is a sports club located in Brisbane, Australia. The club is dedicated to promoting walking as a healthy form of exercise while also fostering lasting friendships among its members. Algester Walkers organises regular walks through parklands with beautiful trees, streams, and lakes, providing a pleasant and scenic experience for participants.
The group meets three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with walks starting at 5:00 pm. The duration of each walk is around 45–60 minutes, and the group maintains a medium pace to accommodate participants of varying fitness levels. With a current membership of 28 individuals, Algester Walkers encourages new members to join and be a part of their friendly and supportive community.
The club welcomes dog owners, as long as the dogs are well-behaved and on leashes during the walks. However, Algester Walkers is not pram or wheelchair-friendly, as some pathways may be uneven or unsuitable for these types of mobility aids.
The meeting point for the walks is the Col Bennett Park Rotunda, located opposite 22 Yorrell St, Algester. The park is easily accessible and provides a convenient starting point for the group's walking activities.
Algester Walkers also organises occasional social outings, allowing members to engage in additional activities and build stronger connexions with fellow walkers. These outings provide an opportunity for relaxation and enjoyment outside the regular walking sessions.
Membership in Algester Walkers is open to anyone interested in improving their fitness, enjoying the great outdoors, and forming new friendships. By joining the group, individuals can benefit from the physical and mental health advantages of regular walking, which include managing weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of chronic diseases, maintaining bone density, and improving balance and coordination.
For healthcare professionals, Algester Walkers offers a structured and supportive walking programme that complements their care. Referring patients to this programme can assist in meeting national physical activity guidelines and supporting overall health and well-being.
Algester Walkers is proudly supported by the National Heart Foundation of Australia and shares its commitment to promoting heart health and wellness. The club acknowledges and respects the Traditional Owners and custodians of the land where they walk and operate.
