Appletree Wing Chun

Appletree Wing Chun Kung Fu is a martial arts school located in North Shields, New Zealand. The school is dedicated to the practise of Wing Chun Kung Fu in a realistic and practical manner.

The instructors at Appletree Wing Chun believe in the principle of not fooling oneself, recognising that self-deception is the easiest trap to fall into. They aim to use Wing Chun Kung Fu not only in violent situations but also in everyday life, finding simplicity and effectiveness in the system. The school emphasises the importance of approaching any situation with calmness and an intention to move beyond struggles and conflicts.

At Appletree Wing Chun, the practise involves relaxation and self-education through investigating the forms, rather than mindless repetition and drilling. The school aims to remain true to the essence of Wing Chun as a direct and simplified idea. Students are encouraged to develop an understanding of Wing Chun Kung Fu and how it relates to a better understanding of themselves. The school believes that martial arts can help individuals develop not only practical self-defence skills but also personal growth.

Appletree Wing Chun does not use belts or sashes or have gradings. The school believes that progress is best determined through continuous monitoring and feedback given at each session. The training at Appletree Wing Chun follows the Ip Man Lineage.

Sifu Paul Roughead is the lead instructor at Appletree Wing Chun. He has been studying and training in martial arts, primarily Wing Chun, for over 30 years. He has also trained in and been influenced by other Chinese Boxing styles. Sifu Peter May is considered his Si Gung, or ancestral master.

Appletree Wing Chun welcomes anyone interested in joining their training. They offer group lessons at a price of 7 per session or 20 for 4 sessions. Private one-on-one lessons are also available at a rate of 18 per hour. Payments are made in advance, and lessons run consecutively.
