In response to the Quebec government's ban on municipalities burying their food waste, the Municipality of Saint-Polycarpe initiated a food waste collection program in 2018. With the brown bin, residents can transform their food waste into compost that enriches the soil instead of degrading it. This initiative complements existing composting efforts at home, allowing residents to dispose of meat, fish, leftover meals, and other non-compostable items easily. The collected food waste is then transported to Lachute, where it is converted into compost and sold to various businesses and farmers.
For green waste such as grass clippings, leaves, and branches, the municipality organizes special collections throughout the year. Branches are collected four times a year between May and October, while there is a separate collection for leaves in late autumn. The municipality encourages residents to practice grasscycling, where grass clippings are left on the lawn during mowing to provide natural nutrients and moisture to the grass. This environmentally friendly practice helps nourish the lawn and reduce the need for artificial fertilizers.
Arena St-Polycarpe, housed within the Sportif Soulanges Centre, not only promotes a healthy lifestyle through sports activities but also encourages sustainable waste management practices within the community. Residents can enjoy a range of recreational facilities while contributing to environmental conservation efforts.
