AWHI Yoga & Wellbeing is a Yoga studio and meditation instructor located in Wellington, New Zealand. The name “Awhi” comes from the Maori word meaning to embrace, hug, support, and cherish. This reflects the studio's commitment to creating a supportive community that embraces the wellbeing of the mind, body, and spirit.
At AWHI Yoga & Wellbeing, they believe in the holistic approach to wellbeing, following the principles of Te Whare Tapa Wh, the four pillars of Hauora or Wellbeing. They understand that mindful movement and physical health, known as Tinana, can greatly impact mental and emotional wellbeing, also known as Hinengaro. By nurturing these aspects, they aim to help individuals connect with their Wairua or spirit, finding a sense of connexion and purpose in the world.
Diversity and inclusivity are highly valued at AWHI Yoga & Wellbeing. They believe that everyone deserves access to wellbeing and that each person's wellbeing needs are unique. To accommodate this, they offer a range of classes such as Vinyasa Flow Yoga (both heated and non-heated), gentle Yin Yoga, Meditation, Yin Therapy, Pilates, live music, Yoga events, workshops, self-development programmes, retreats, and trainings.
AWHI Yoga & Wellbeing's studio is conveniently located in the Wellington CBD at 15 Johnston Street, just one block back from Lambton Quay and the Waterfront. Their studio consists of two spaces: the large main studio called “Whare Oho,” which is used for most classes, and the smaller studio called “Whare Wnanga,” used for smaller classes, programmes, trainings, and meetings. The lounge and reception area serve as a welcoming space for members to relax, read, or enjoy complimentary herbal tea from the communi-tea urn before class.
The studio is equipped with 4 showers, 3 toilets, cubbies, and mat storage for the convenience of its members. AWHI Yoga & Wellbeing strives to be plastic-free, encouraging members to bring their own drink bottles and fill them from the in-studio kitchenette and water philtre. Mats and towels can be hired from reception for $2 per visit, but members are also welcome to bring their own. The studio provides bolsters, blocks, cushions, straps, and blankets as needed.
Booking classes is optional and can be easily done through the AWHI App. Alternatively, members can simply show up 15 minutes prior to the class start time. The studio is always ready to welcome new members from all walks of life to experience the AWHI community and embrace their journey towards self-expression and wellbeing.
