Balerno Bowling Club

Bowling Club, located in the picturesque village of Balerno, just 9 miles west of Edinburgh. Founded in 1885, Balerno Bowling Club has since become a renowned Scottish Bowling Club, with a rich history of success in District, Scottish, and National competitions.

The club boasts an impressive record of achievements, with members consistently earning podium finishes in events organised by prominent bodies such as the Edinburgh Bowling Association, West Edinburgh League (WEL), and the Water of Leith Senior Bowling Association (WOLS). In fact, our senior ladies team, comprising Helen Girdler, Margaret Turner, Mabel Jackson, and Anne Blake, represented Scotland in the 2019 British Isles Championship on the Isle of Jersey, where they proudly secured the silver medal. Additionally, Anne Blake became the second female member from Balerno to win the prestigious Steel Trophy, following in the footsteps of Elspeth Oliver in 1994. This remarkable success is a testament to the skill and dedication of our members.

Balerno Bowling Club warmly welcomes new members and offers a range of membership options to suit everyone's preferences. Regular bowlers can join as full members, while those who prefer a more social experience can choose to become social members with restricted bowling privileges. We are pleased to announce that our subscription fees have been frozen for another year, making it an ideal time to join our friendly and vibrant club.

Our green is open for play from April to September, providing ample opportunities for members to enjoy the sport in beautiful surroundings. League games are played throughout the summer, with the ladies' league taking place on Wednesday afternoons, the men's league on Wednesday and Friday evenings, and the thriving senior section holding league games on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. In addition to the organised league matches, members also have the chance to participate in friendly games against touring clubs, fostering a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.

Balerno Bowling Club is more than just a sporting venueit is also a thriving social hub. The club features a bustling bar where members can relax, socialise, and cheer on their favourite teams with BT Sports screenings. Regular pool and darts events provide further opportunities for friendly competition and camaraderie. The fully licenced bar offers a range of keg beers, including popular brands such as Belhaven, Tennent's, and Carlsberg, as well as a selection of bottled ales and spirits.

For those looking to host special events or celebrations, the club offers a separate function suite downstairs, with a capacity of up to 120 guests. The function suite includes its own bar and provides a stage for regular cabarets featuring well-known Scottish artists. Members have the privilege of hiring this versatile space for a variety of occasions.
