Richard, the organiser, has a special message for the sports community. He wanted everyone to know about the Bennett Road Carpark Timber Trail in Ongarue, perfect for those keen on cycling or walking in the heart of the King Country in New Zealand’s central North Island.
The Timber Trail, an easy-to-intermediate graded track, winds through both native and exotic plantation forests. It features 35 bridges, including the well-known 141-metre Maramataha suspension bridge. Along the way, one can spot relics left by timber loggers from the past and hear the native birds like tūī and kererū.
Among the trail's highlights is the Ongarue Spiral, an impressive engineering feat with a total elevation gain of 1,412 metres and a descent of 1,765 metres, ending with a 353-metre descent from the Pureora end.
At Bennett Road Carpark, there are accommodation options, luggage transfers, and shuttle services. The trail is accessible year-round and can be completed in two days over its 85-kilometre length.
This trail is part of Ngā Haerenga - New Zealand Cycle Trail Network, one of the 23 Great Rides. Richard extends his thanks to the partners who have made this adventure trail possible.
If you’re looking to book your Timber Trail adventure, the local i-Site is ready to assist with planning and reservations. Booking directly with Trail Partners is also an option to experience the trail.
