Located in the Buloke Shire, Birchip Bowls Club is a thriving sports club that offers locals the opportunity to enjoy the great game of lawn bowls. With a rich history and a focus on both social and competitive bowling, the club has become a valuable part of the community.
The club's story began on 13 September 1958, when the Highton Progress Association decided to establish a bowling club in the picturesque suburb. Three years later, on 30 September 1961, the Highton Bowls Club officially opened its doors, with the first clubhouse opening the following year. In 1991, the current clubhouse was unveiled, providing a modern and welcoming space for members.
Birchip Bowls Club hosts a range of activities to suit all members. Regular men's, ladies', and mixed social matches are held on the greens, allowing members to enjoy friendly competition. In addition, the club offers a Friday Night Bistro, where members can indulge in delicious meals and socialise with fellow bowlers. Various social events are also held at the clubhouse and bar, creating a vibrant atmosphere for all.
Competitions are an important part of Birchip Bowls Club's calendar. Members can participate in Club Championship events or join the Midweek (Tuesday) and Weekend (Saturday) Pennants in the Geelong Bowls Region competition. Last year, the club achieved a remarkable feat, with all seven Pennant teams reaching the finals. The Division 1 Pennant team even secured the leadingship and moved up to the premier League, the top grade for Geelong and Ballarat combined.
Facilities at Birchip Bowls Club are top-notch. The club boasts three outdoor greens, including two grass greens and one synthetic green. The synthetic green, known as the 'Founder's Green,' is conveniently situated in front of the clubhouse and is equipped with lighting for day and night play throughout the year. The clubhouse itself is spacious and can comfortably accommodate over 160 members, players, or guests.
The commercial-grade kitchen is used by members or the club's in-house caterer to provide delicious meals for club events.
To get involved with Birchip Bowls Club, Greg Cracknell, the Men's President, invites non-members to “come through the gate and see what we've got to offer. ” The club prides itself on its welcoming and friendly environment, which has been amplified with recent successes and social events. Whether you're an experienced bowler or a complete novice, Birchip Bowls Club welcomes all levels of skill and experience.
