Blackpool Polar Bears is a swimming club in Blackpool, New Zealand, that is dedicated to promoting swimming for individuals with disabilities. The club operates as a registered charity and aims to provide a supportive and inclusive environment for its members. The swimming sessions take place on Sundays at Moor Park Swimming Pool from 8:55am to 12pm, with members being allocated specific swimming times based on their ability.
The Blackpool Polar Bears would not exist without the help and support of its dedicated team of volunteer teachers and helpers in the water. These individuals play an essential role in ensuring the smooth running of the club and the safety of its members. The club is also grateful for the support it has received from various organisations and businesses, including Glasdons UK, the Big Lottery Fund, Morrisons Foundation, the Sandcastle Water Park, and other local businesses who have generously donated prizes for raffles.
The Blackpool Polar Bears has a rich history of accomplishments, dating back to 2001 when participants from the club won several gold, silver, and bronze medals. Notable achievements include the successful participation of club members in the Special Olympics GB summer games in Glasgow and Leicester, where they won numerous gold, silver, and bronze medals. Eight members were also selected to represent the North West England team in swimming events at the Special Olympics “Summer Games” held in Sheffield in August 2017.
To support the activities and initiatives of the Blackpool Polar Bears, individuals are encouraged to make a small donation. Donations can be made through Paypal or by sending a contribution to the club's address at 7 Granville Road, Blackpool, FY1 3NP.
In addition to swimming sessions, the Blackpool Polar Bears organises a range of activities throughout the year. These include club galas, where swimmers have the opportunity to beat their own times and participate in regional and national competitions. Social activities, such as a Christmas party and the Annual General Meeting with awards presentation, provide members with opportunities for fun and celebration. The club also arranges trips to various attractions, including Calvert Trust Activity Centre, Bendrigg Trust Activity Centre, Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, Boat trip to Ambleside finishing at Brockholes Estate, Camelot Theme Park, Blue Planet Aquarium, and Chester Zoo.
The swimming facilities at Moor Park Swimming Pool have been recently refurbished to a high standard. The pool features a large, 25-metre main pool and a smaller learner pool. A spectators' area is available for parents and carers to watch the swimmers, and vending machines provide refreshments. There is ample parking available at the rear of the swimming pool and leisure centre.
