Balboa is a close-connected partner dance that emphasises lead and follow roles. The leader initiates the movements through the connexion between the couple, and the follower responds in a way that matches or accentuates the leader's ideas. In Pure Balboa, dancers remain in the closed position throughout the dance, creating a beautiful image as if they are “floating” across the floor. This style involves weight shifts and shuffle steps, allowing room for improvisation and styling from the follower.
Another dance style taught at Brisbane Balboa Swing is Bal-Swing, which combines Pure Balboa with the dance style known as “Swing. ” Originally, Swing was a melting pot of various steps, turns, and kicks. Over time, Bal-Swing emerged as a fusion of Pure Balboa and Swing, adopting Pure Balboa as its basic steps. Bal-Swing adds an extra layer of excitement to the dance repertoire with moves such as Come-arounds, Crossovers, Lolly kicks, and Throw-outs.
