About

Burton Athletic Club, established in 1883, has been serving the local community of Burton-on-Trent for over a century. Formerly known as the Burton Harriers and later as The Burton & District Athletic Club, it adopted its current name in 1963. The club's motto since its inception has been “A sound mind in a sound body”. Over the years, the club has attracted over 12,000 spectators to its events, which include a variety of disciplines such as track and field, cross country, and road racing.

Burton Athletic Club has a rich history of success, with its athletes representing Staffordshire, the Midlands, Great Britain, and Ireland. The club has won titles ranging from the Midlands junior cross-country championship to the Ireland triple jump championship. It has also produced talented athletes in various disciplines, including a former Olympic decathlete. Today, Burton Athletic Club stands as one of the oldest clubs in the UK and continues to compete in the Midlands Athletic Association, of which it is a founder member.

The club is dedicated to developing athletes of all ages and abilities. They have a team of qualified coaches who specialise in various disciplines and provide training for dedicated groups. The club's current list of coaches includes Jaime Walker as the Head Throws Coach, Paul Smith as the Head Sprints and Hurdles Coach, Graham Lamb as the Middle Distance and Cross Country Coach, Keith Morant as the Young Athletes Track and Field Coach, Stevie Kugelmann as the Young Athletes Track and Field Coach, Angela Fellows as the Young Athletes Track and Field Coach, Jo Sharpe as the Young Athletes Track and Field Coach, Mark Hedges as the High Jump Coach, and Trevor Sharpe as the Middle Distance and Cross Country Coach.

Burton Athletic Club is always on the lookout for new coaches, whether they are just starting their coaching journey or looking to further develop their skills. Beginner coaches will receive mentoring from experienced coaches and will have the opportunity to obtain full qualifications, with the club covering all the costs.

The club's committee plays a crucial role in the smooth running of the organisation. The committee for 2023 consists of Trevor Sharpe as President, Jaime Walker as Chairman, Graham Lamb as Vice Chairman, Judy Kelsall as Secretary, Jenna Galiszewski as Assistant Secretary, Jackie Acton as Treasurer and Kit Secretary, and Sarah as the Auditor.

For those interested in joining the club, Burton Athletic Club welcomes new members to attend their training nights to get a glimpse of a typical session, meet the athletes and coaches, and learn more about the club. An induction is required before officially joining, and these sessions take place once a month. To book an induction or for general enquiries, please contact Judy Kelsall, the club secretary, at judykelsall@btinternet. Com or email Burtonathleticsclub@outlook.
