About

Caledonian Cycleway is a cycling park located in Dumfries, New Zealand. Spanning just under seven miles, this park offers a predominantly traffic-free and level route that is ideal for cyclists of all skill levels.

The starting point of the Caledonian Cycleway is Dock Park, from where cyclists can embark on a scenic journey to Lochthorn Library. The route takes cyclists along the tranquil Whitesands and College Road, crossing the river at the College Bridge. Following the quiet College Road, cyclists will join the Maxwelltown Cycle path before crossing the Nith again on the viaduct and heading towards Nunholme Road.

Upon reaching Edinburgh Road, cyclists will use the shared use path and continue towards the start of the Caledonian Cycleway. From there, it's a pleasant and traffic-free couple of miles to Lochthorn Library. After enjoying the library, cyclists can retrace their steps back along the Caledonian Cycleway, taking another shared use path that leads to the station. Cyclists can then follow Newall Terrace back towards town.

It's important to note that the last section of the route is currently one way, but there are plans for a contraflow for bikes and a dedicated crossing of Loreburn Street. For safety reasons, cyclists may need to walk the last section and make their way down the High Street and Bank Street back to the Whitesands and Dock Park.

The Caledonian Cycleway is suitable for cyclists of all ages, including novice riders and families. However, it may be challenging for very young children to complete the entire seven-mile journey, so adult supervision is recommended for children under 12.

One notable feature of this cycling park is the availability of a Cyclehire point and a park and ride car park at Lochthorn Library. This makes it convenient for commuters who drive in on the Edinburgh Road to pick up a bike at the library and avoid the hassle of driving into town.

Cyclists interested in exploring the Caledonian Cycleway can meet at Dock Park at 2 pm. There is free parking available all day for those coming from further afield. Whether you're a local resident or a visitor to Dumfries, the Caledonian Cycleway offers a delightful and accessible cycling experience amidst the picturesque surroundings of Dumfries.
