Canons Athletic Track

Canons Athletic Track, located in Mitcham, is a historic running track that has recently undergone a restoration project. The track, which dates back to the 1920s, was once the home of the Mitcham Athletics Club and has now been brought back to its former glory. It is now free to use for athletes of all levels at any time.

This athletic track holds a significant place in the community, and its restoration is a testament to the ongoing commitment to preserving the area's heritage. The project was made possible thanks to the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund and The National Lottery Community Fund. It is being undertaken by Merton Council with the assistance of various community groups.

The restoration of the track is just one aspect of the larger Canons House & Grounds project, which aims to revitalise the entire space. The project includes a major capital works project and a programme of community events and activities that will run until September 2023.

In addition to the athletic track, visitors to Canons House & Grounds can enjoy other amenities such as a newly opened café and park toilets. The café offers a pleasant space to relax and is available for hire. The walled garden has also been restored, with repairs to the brickwork, and a new planting scheme is set to be completed by summer 2023.

The community garden, managed by a team of volunteers and local community groups, provides a space for growing fruits, vegetables, and flowers. The mediaeval dovecote and pond have been restored, adding to the historic charm of the site. The obelisk, which was first constructed in 1822, has been repaired, and the area surrounding it has been transformed into a new entrance to the Canons House & Grounds.

Canons House itself, a Grade II* listed building, has been restored and will serve as a joint community and workspace. This beautiful historic house adds to the overall appeal of the location.
