Carburn Park Skating Rink is a popular outdoor ice skating rink located in Calgary, specifically at Carburn Park in the southeast part of the city. The rink is set against the backdrop of a picturesque lake, lagoon, pathways, benches, and picnic tables, making it the perfect destination for a day of skating and enjoying the outdoors.
Unfortunately, due to fluctuating ice conditions, the skating rink at Carburn Park is currently closed for the season. However, visitors can still explore the park's other features, such as the two man-made ponds, regional pathways, and abundant wildlife, waterfowl, and wildflowers that call the park home.
Covering 135 hectares, Carburn Park offers a peaceful oasis in the city where visitors can connect with nature. The preserved wildlife habitat and ecosystem provide a beautiful and serene setting for outdoor activities like bird watching, walking trails, and even fishing (ice fishing is not recommended as the pond is river-fed).
The park boasts a diverse range of flora and fauna, including Balsam Poplar trees, American Silverberry, Saskatoon, Choke Cherry, Canada Buffaloberry, Mealy Primrose, Heal-all, and more. The ponds attract various species of fish-eating birds, while the river channel is home to diving ducks like Common Goldeneye and Buffleheads.
Carburn Park's history is also rich, with it once being part of Senator Patrick Burns' prairie empire and serving as the proposed right-of-way for a railway line connecting Calgary to Montana.
Visitors to Carburn Park Skating Rink can immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the surroundings while enjoying a fun and memorable ice skating experience. Whether it's gliding across the icy surface or taking a leisurely stroll along the pathways, Carburn Park offers something for everyone to enjoy in Calgary's great outdoors.
