Carnforth Swimming Pool, under the dedicated stewardship of Carnforth, has been a cornerstone for the community since its establishment in 1978. Originally launched by Lancashire County Council and managed by Lancashire City Council, the pool aimed to promote the physical and mental health benefits of swimming and curtail drowning incidents in local water bodies.
Facing closure in 2017 due to financial challenges, Carnforth, along with committed voluntary Trustees, formed a not-for-profit charity to save the pool. Their efforts culminated in the pool's reopening in February 2018 under a 125-year lease, secured at a nominal rent from the Council.
Since its revival, the pool has welcomed a diverse range of visitors, including youngsters and school PTAs from over twenty local institutions. It serves as a focal point for learning and community engagement.
Support from government grants, Carnforth Town Council, Carnforth Rotary, and various fundraising initiatives helped the pool navigate the financial strains of the COVID-19 lockdowns. Although the pool reopened in April 2021, it still seeks external funding to enhance its services. Donations are welcomed both for general support and specific activities.
Carnforth Swimming Pool functions as a community hub, promoting fitness and fun. As a not-for-profit entity, all income is reinvested to ensure the pool's future accessibility and improvement.
Patrons have praised the pool's staff and amenities. Bonnie Ward commends the helpful staff and reasonable prices, while Benjamin Kirkham highlights the pool as ideal for children and babies. Julie Simpson and Bekki Goult lauded the swimming lessons, emphasising the supportive team and the remarkable progress in children's skills. Rachel Dickinson and Anna Fox expressed gratitude for family float sessions that foster quality time.
To support Carnforth Swimming Pool, individuals can subscribe to the mailing list and explore fundraising options on the pool's website, ensuring continued health, wellbeing, and enjoyment for all.
