Chandralaya School of Dance, located in Bentleigh, is a renowned dance school that brings the classical Indian dance to Melbourne in both its purest form and contemporary adaptations. With a mission to nurture and develop the inherent artistic interests of each student, Chandralaya provides a friendly environment for dancers to express themselves and be inspired.
Led by Artistic Director Deepa Mani, a talented and versatile dancer with over 30 years of training and experience, Chandralaya offers a range of dance styles including classical Bharatanatyam, contemporary, and the unique bridging form that combines traditional techniques with modern visual vibes.
Bharatanatyam, one of the oldest classical dance forms from Tamil Nadu, India, is celebrated at Chandralaya for its grace, purity, statuesque poses, and intricate techniques. Through years of practise, students master each aspect of Bharatanatyam, from the precise body movements (Nritta) to the expressive storytelling (Nritya).
In addition to Bharatanatyam, Chandralaya School of Dance embraces contemporary dance, which breaks away from tradition and experiments with new boundaries. With creativity at its core, contemporary dance combines various forms, including Bharatanatyam, jazz, and ballet, to create unique movements and artistic expressions.
Chandralaya also offers the bridging form, a fusion of classical and contemporary styles that uses Bharatanatyam techniques presented in a modern format. This form allows dancers to showcase their versatility and adaptability by incorporating elements from both traditions.
The school provides classes for students of all levels, from beginners to advanced dancers, ensuring that each individual receives comprehensive training and guidance. Through its curriculum, Chandralaya instils discipline, artistry, and a deep connexion to the rich cultural heritage of Indian classical dance.
