Chantraine School of Dance UK, located in Wanstead, Buckinghamshire, offers a holistic approach to dance. With a focus on the Dance of Expression, they provide classes in ballet, contemporary, jazz, and traditional dance styles for all ages. Established by Alain and Franoise Chantraine, the school aims to unite the artistic, educational, and human dimensions of dance.
The artistic aspect of Chantraine Dance invites individuals into a world of movement, music, poetry, sculpture, and connexion with the natural world. Franoise Chantraine, a highly honoured dancer, choreographer, and teacher, has created over 180 diverse choreographies, showcasing her ability to work with various music genres. Her approach to dance allows each dancer to be fully present in every step and gesture.
Education is a key component of Chantraine Dance. Franoise and Alain Chantraine have developed a complete philosophy and practise of dance education. Their teaching method offers a joyful and challenging approach to learning, dancing, and living, incorporating the “five Chantraine times.
Chantraine Dance is also deeply rooted in respect and love for human beings in all their diversity. Their classes and events are open to everyone, emphasising inclusivity and celebrating the uniqueness of each individual.
The Chantraine Approach, summarised as “I breathe, I let go, I discover,” incorporates three main features. Firstly, it focuses on the positive, regardless of circumstances. Secondly, it cultivates awareness of different energy levels. Lastly, it aims to provide a balanced experience in every class through the “five times of life and dance”: Rhythm, Inner Awareness, Technique, Creativity, and Choreography.
The school was founded by Franoise Chantraine and her late husband Alain Chantraine, a musician, artist, poet, and philosopher. Franoise, a gifted violinist who also studied psychology and physiotherapy, has received high honours in France and from Unesco for her contributions to dance. Her life and work are detailed in a book called “La Danse de la Vie,” available in English upon request. Alain's poetry, which further adds to the legacy of the school, has been translated into English.
In 2018, Franoise entrusted the direction of the school to Marie-Laure de Blois, who has been trained and working closely with her since 2000. Marie-Laure, along with the entire team of teachers, is dedicated to continuing the transmission of Franoise's work and promoting the vision of Alain and Franoise.
Patricia Woodall, trained by Franoise Chantraine, played a significant role in pioneering Chantraine dance in England in 1978. She founded and directed the English Chantraine school, teaching regular classes for 40 years and organising performances and workshops in London. Her passion and dedication to Chantraine dance continue to inspire.
Kate Green, trained by Patricia and Franoise, now oversees the direction of the school and teacher training in the UK. In collaboration with the entire team, Kate carries forward the legacy of Alain and Franoise, ensuring the continuation of their transformative work.
Chantraine School of Dance UK is a vibrant and welcoming community that offers a unique and enriching dance experience. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced dancer, the school provides a nurturing environment where individuals can explore and express themselves through the beauty of dance.
