Chillagoe Caving Club Inc. (CCC) is a prominent sports club located in the Mareeba Shire, Australia. Established in 1973, CCC is recognised both nationally and internationally for its member activities and the high standard of its caving publications. The club was formed with the aim of bringing together active cavers in the area, fostering the sport and science of caving, particularly in the Chillagoe region.
As an associate of the Australian Speleological Federation and a corporate member since 1995, CCC has made significant contributions to cave research. Members have dedicated thousands of hours to studying cave formation, karst management, flora and fauna, and other related fields. The club is committed to passing on this knowledge and ensuring the continuation of research for future generations.
CCC maintains a strong and positive relationship with the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service, which operates daily tours of selected tourist caves in Chillagoe. The club also operates a clubhouse in Chillagoe, which serves as a meeting place, a tackle centre, and provides accommodation for both members and visiting cavers. The clubhouse has various facilities, including a kitchen, meeting and lounge areas, toilets, hot showers, bunk accommodation, camping areas, and a tackle room that offers helmets and SRT gear for rent.
Cavers of all backgrounds and interests are welcomed at CCC. Whether adventurers, explorers, scientists, palaeontologists, geologists, or surveyors, the club provides a platform for these individuals to connect, share information, socialise, and explore caves together. CCC offers a vibrant community for caving enthusiasts, fostering an environment of camaraderie and support.
CCC also provides the opportunity for individuals and groups to hire their clubhouse and campsite. The clubhouse is located on Cathedral Street, opposite the Primary School and the Police Station in Chillagoe. The property consists of a 6-acre area with the caretaker's residence, the clubhouse, and the refurbished old Chillagoe school building which provides accommodation and multipurpose areas.
