About

City Academy of Ballet is Peterborough's longest running dance school, with a rich history spanning over 70 years. Established in 1951 by Margaret Jones, the school initially focused on teaching the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) grades. In later years, June Bendall took over the school and adopted the classical ballet syllabus of the Federation of Russian Classical Ballet (FRCB), bringing the Russian style to the academy.

Led by the current Principal, Eileen Bennett, who took over in 1963 after being a student at the academy, City Academy of Ballet has continuously evolved and grown. Following a brief closure in the early 1970s, the school reopened in 1976 and became affiliated with the National Association of Teachers of Dancing (NATD), teaching their Classic Ballet (Russian Style) syllabus and participating in examinations, medal tests, and awards.

In 2014, the academy introduced contemporary dance to its curriculum, following the launch of the NATD's contemporary graded syllabus. The academy ensures that all examinations are accredited by the Council for Dance Education and Training (CDET), regulated by Ofqual, and that the vocational grades qualify for UCAS points.

City Academy of Ballet takes pride in its annual show performances, which have been held at the Key Theatre in Peterborough since 1977. These performances provide students with valuable stage experience and allow them to showcase their talent and hard work to their families and the local community.

Over the years, many of the academy's pupils have used their training at City Academy of Ballet to pursue further dance education in vocational schools and degree courses in dance and performing arts at universities. This has paved the way for successful careers in the theatre and dance education, showcasing the academy's commitment to nurturing young talent and supporting their aspirations.

Classes at City Academy of Ballet are available for all age groups, starting from age 4 and up. The academy offers both Ballet and Contemporary classes for beginners, intermediate dancers, and advanced dancers. The academy follows a graded system, with levels ranging from Primary to Vocational Teaching Grades. Additionally, there is a dedicated class for beginner/returner adults who are passionate about ballet.

With a team of highly experienced teachers, City Academy of Ballet ensures that students receive quality instruction and guidance to develop their skills and artistic expression. The academy prides itself on providing a supportive and encouraging learning environment, fostering a love for dance and nurturing each student's individual potential.

To accommodate students and their families, the academy offers classes at different locations and times. Ballet classes are held at Werrington Parish Village Centre on Monday and Tuesday evenings, and Ballet and Contemporary classes are offered at Dogsthorpe Community Centre on Saturday mornings and afternoons.
