Hi all,
Alex McKintosh here, just wanted to give a quick shoutout about the fantastic stuff happening at the Cluarankwai Judo Club in Kilmarnock!
Founded back in 1949, Cluarankwai Judo Club is one of the oldest judo clubs still going strong in Scotland. We’re not-for-profit, always focusing on providing top-notch coaching for all our members. With the highest number of qualified BJA Senior Club Coaches in Scotland, we run classes for both adults and kids three nights a week.
Boasting over a hundred active members, we've built a solid reputation. We’ve had a host of special guests like World Champions, Olympic Medallists, and top coaches drop by over the years.
In 2007, our club moved to a new, purpose-built Dojo, which has some of the best facilities you’ll find in the UK. The Dojo was reopened by Kisaburo Watanabe, an 8th Dan judo master. We’ve got a double mat area, spectator seating, spacious changing rooms, and even a fully-equipped gym. While judo is our main focus, these facilities also support training in other sports.
Our history is a point of pride. Founded by Ted Routley (a World War II Commando and Budokwai-trained), the name “Cluarankwai” combines the Gaelic word for thistle and the Japanese word for the way. Our motto, “Defence not Defiance,” perfectly captures our ethos.
We've operated in various places from an old Scout Hut to a purpose-built training hall funded by the members and a Scottish Sports Council grant. Key figures from our history include Pat Hughes, John L Young, John S Young, Tommy Rankin, Bert Houston, Ronnie Barbour, and Davey.
For those keen on mastering the throws, our extensive guide to the Gokyo no Waza will be super helpful. It includes animations, tips from champions, and a nifty chart to track your progress.
So, whether you’re a seasoned judoka or just starting, Cluarankwai Judo Club is the place to be. Join us for some world-class training and become part of our vibrant community!
Cheers,
Alex McKintosh
