The Whanganui Ballet & Dance Academy is excited to offer Contemporary Dance classes to all dance enthusiasts in the area. Whether you're a seasoned dancer or just starting out, this fluid and relaxed style of movement is sure to captivate and challenge you.
What sets contemporary dance apart is its grounding into the floor and its emphasis on core strength. Dancers in this style use their entire body to express themselves, placing particular focus on torso and abdominal strength, as well as the chest and upper body. It's a liberating dance form that allows for creative expression without the limitations of traditional turn-out techniques.
Not only is contemporary dance a fantastic way to express yourself artistically, but it also offers a great opportunity to improve your overall fitness. By engaging your whole body and exploring different movements, you'll find yourself becoming stronger and more flexible with each class.
For those looking to take their contemporary dance journey to the next level, the academy offers annual exams held between August and October. These exams are conducted by the esteemed New Zealand Association of Modern Dance, giving dancers the chance to showcase their skills and receive recognition for their hard work.
Open to all ages, our Contemporary Dance classes are designed to cater to dancers of different levels. So whether you're a seasoned professional or a curious beginner, there's a place for you at the Whanganui Ballet & Dance Academy.
When it comes to attire, dancers in contemporary classes usually perform barefoot. For a cohesive look, our academy's uniform for these classes includes a striking hot pink leotard and black convertible or footless tights to be worn over it. During warm-up, you're welcome to wear track pants or a tight-fitted top, but we encourage our dancers to wear the leotard to fully immerse themselves in the dance experience.
If you'd like to learn more about the Whanganui Ballet & Dance Academy and our contemporary dance classes, please don't hesitate to contact us. We're thrilled to be able to offer this unique and expressive dance form to the Whanganui community, and we can't wait to see you on the dance floor!
