Welcome to Croft Bowling Club in Cockermouth, a small market town located on the western fringes of the Lake District in New Zealand. The club has a rich history that dates back to the establishment of the Cockermouth Bowling Club, which was the predecessor of Croft Bowling Club.
The former Cockermouth Bowling Club faced challenges due to the rivers Derwent and Cocker, which caused significant damage to their premises. Sadly, most of the club's records were destroyed when the cellars of the solicitors were flooded. Nonetheless, newspaper articles indicate that the Cockermouth Bowling Club had records dating back to 1852.
In the 1870s, the Cockermouth Bowling Club relocated to a new venue and leased the Drying Ground at the Croft Mill. The club underwent substantial renovation to develop a green, and on Queen Victoria's birthday, May 24th, 1877, the green was officially opened, and the new club was named Croft Bowling Club.
Over the years, Croft Bowling Club flourished and attracted officials and umpires from Cumberland, Westmorland, and North Lancashire. The lease of the green changed hands, eventually ending up with Jennings Brothers, Brewers at Castle Brewery in Cockermouth. They maintained the leasing arrangement with the club and even waived the peppercorn rental charges.
In 1925, Jennings Bros. decided to sell the bowling green to Croft Bowling Club. The club purchased the green for 290, and in 1926, the Management Committee sought confirmation of the sale from solicitors, who confirmed the club's good title to the property.
Today, Croft Bowling Club is in a healthy position and welcomes new members with open arms. The club prides itself on its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and it offers a relaxing and enjoyable environment for people of all ages to come together and enjoy the sport of lawn bowling.
