Established back in 2000, Cumberland Netball Club stands proud as the largest netball club in London, boasting over 300 members. With 19 teams, they compete across various levels including National Prem, Regional, County, and local leagues. In 2017, they were thrilled to receive the England Netball's Outstanding Club of the Year award and they're also a Gold Caps accredited club.
At Cumberland, there's a strong emphasis on quality coaching during their weekly training sessions and competitive match play at all levels. The club's ethos centres around creating a supportive and inclusive environment where players of all ages and abilities can enjoy the sport and develop their skills.
Andrew, the club organiser, wanted to share a few key points about what the club stands for. Their main aim is to be the competitive netball club of choice in London. They work towards this by leading the development of the game on and off the court – including umpiring, coaching, playing, and cultural aspects. There's also a focus on increasing exposure at both the elite and junior levels to strengthen the Cumberland culture.
Core values at Cumberland are excellence, family, empowerment, inclusiveness, and respect. These values are reflected in their performance and club culture. A top team of coaches is vital to their success, with each team having a training coach and a match day coach whenever possible.
Recognising the crucial role of umpires, Cumberland is dedicated to training and developing umpiring skills. Andrew emphasises that the club is committed not just to player opportunities but also to the development of coaches and umpires. They welcome members to join their coaching and umpiring teams, offering support and training for those keen to gain extra skills and get more involved in netball.
