Curtin Walking Group is a sports club based in Canberra that provides a friendly and supportive environment for individuals who enjoy walking for fitness and leisure. With a current membership of 13 members, the group welcomes individuals of all ages and fitness levels to join them on their weekly walks.
Led by walk organiser Claudia, the group meets every Thursday at 9:15 am for a duration of 45 to 60 minutes. The walks are conducted at a slow pace, allowing participants to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and engage in conversation along the way. While the group is not dog-friendly or pram/wheelchair friendly, individuals who are able to walk comfortably without these accommodations are encouraged to participate.
The meeting point for the walks is at Curtin Milkbar in Curtin, Canberra. This location provides a convenient starting point and is easily accessible for participants. Members of the group can also take advantage of nearby walking groups, such as the Chifley Trippers Walking Group and Yarralumla Walking Group, for additional walking opportunities.
Curtin Walking Group is proudly supported by the National Heart Foundation of Australia, and their walks align with the Foundation's mission to promote and improve heart health. Walking for an average of 30 minutes a day has been proven to lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes by 30 to 40 per cent. Additionally, walking regularly offers various benefits, including weight management, blood pressure and cholesterol control, cancer risk reduction, improved bone density, enhanced balance and coordination, and a lower risk of falls and injuries.
The group also offers personal walking plans for those who want to set specific fitness goals and track their progress. These plans are designed to help individuals improve their overall health and well-being over a six-week period.
Healthcare professionals are encouraged to refer their patients to the structured and supportive walking programme offered by the Curtin Walking Group. This programme complements medical care and provides patients with a motivational environment to meet the national physical activity guidelines.
One member of the group, Maria, shares her story of how walking has transformed her life. After struggling with weight, diabetes, and blood pressure issues for over 40 years, Maria made a commitment to walking daily. Over time, she increased her steps from 5,000 to 15,000 per day, resulting in significant improvements to her health. Maria's experience highlights the positive impact that walking can have on both mental and physical well-being.
To stay connected and engage with the walking community, individuals are encouraged to join the Curtin Walking Group's Facebook group. This online platform provides a space for members to share their experiences, seek support and motivation, and stay updated on upcoming events and walks.
Whether you're a seasoned walker or just starting your fitness journey, Curtin Walking Group welcomes you to join their community and experience the many benefits of walking for a healthier heart.
