In an effort to promote more inclusive programs, a groundbreaking partnership has been established between Special Olympics Australia and DanceSport Australia. Judy Pegus, Chairwoman of DanceSportWA, emphasised the goal of DanceSport Australia to become a truly diverse and inclusive sport. With DanceSport WA already offering all-abilities programs and competitions, their community reach has expanded, making them eligible for state government funding.
This newly forged partnership will now integrate Special Olympics competitions within DanceSport national and state competitions. This means that Special Olympics athletes will have the incredible opportunity to compete on a national level annually through DanceSport competitions. And let's not forget the Special Olympics National Games, held every four years, where these athletes can also showcase their skills.
Corene Strauss, CEO of Special Olympics Australia, couldn't contain her excitement about this partnership and the addition of DanceSport to their Games. Australia is one of the pioneer countries within the global Special Olympics movement to introduce DanceSport programs. So, you can imagine the buzz and anticipation surrounding the Special Olympics National Games in 2022, where a DanceSport demonstration event will be featured.
But the excitement doesn't end there! DanceSport will officially become a part of the subsequent National Games in 2026 and even the highly anticipated World Games in 2027.
