In a fantastic collaboration, Special Olympics Australia has recently partnered with DanceSport Australia to create more opportunities for inclusive programs in dance schools across the country. DanceSport WA, in particular, has already been offering highly attended all-abilities programs and competitions, expanding its community reach and qualifying for state government funding.
This partnership now formalises the integration of Special Olympics competitions within DanceSport national and state competitions. This means that not only will Special Olympics athletes have the chance to compete at a national level through DanceSport competitions, but they will also have the opportunity to participate in the Special Olympics National Games held every four years.
Corene Strauss, CEO of Special Olympics Australia, expressed her excitement about this new sport offering and the incredible opportunity it presents for individuals in the DanceSport community to compete through the Special Olympics pathway. In fact, Australia is at the forefront of the global Special Olympics movement, being one of the first countries to introduce DanceSport programs.
Looking ahead, the 2022 Special Olympics National Games in Launceston, Tasmania, will feature a remarkable DanceSport demonstration event. Following this, DanceSport will become an official sport in the subsequent National Games in 2026 and the World Games in 2027.
