Dance Umbrella Studio is a non-profit dance company located in Nelson, dedicated to providing a welcoming and inclusive space for dancers of all ages and abilities. The studio is run by passionate teachers who believe in the power of dance to build confidence, foster connections, and allow individuals to express themselves freely.
The studio offers a variety of classes to cater to different interests and skill levels. From Dance with Me classes for tiny dancers aged 1-5, to Creative Dance classes for 3-4-year-olds that focus on imagination and basic dance skills, to non-syllabus ballet classes that emphasize correct technique and a love for the art form. Tap classes introduce students to the fundamentals of tap dance and its rich history, while Grooves/Choreography classes explore street dance styles like Hip Hop, Breaking, and House.
Contemporary classes at Dance Umbrella incorporate techniques from various dance genres, with a focus on quality of movement and expression. The studio also offers Beyond Dance, a bi-weekly group for dancers to delve deeper into topics such as mental health, body positivity, and self-care, facilitated by the instructors.
An exciting new addition this season is the Freestyle/Choreography Lab, a workshop-style class for dancers 12 and older to explore improvisation, freestyle, and the creative process of choreography in their chosen dance style. This class aims to empower dancers to create their own dance pieces and express themselves authentically.
