Join Fishjet NZ, the local fishing club in Te Anau, for an unforgettable guided drift boat fishing experience on the stunning Waiau River. Known for its abundance of brown and rainbow trout, the Waiau River is a dream destination for fishing enthusiasts.
Hop aboard Molly, our beloved wooden drift boat, as you embark on a leisurely journey down the river. Whether you prefer fly-fishing or spin fishing, both methods are effective and exciting on the Waiau. As you navigate through untouched rainforest, you'll be treated to a breathtaking wilderness experience that can only be accessed by watercraft.
Our friendly local guide will be there to welcome you aboard Molly and help you catch trout as you drift down the river. The drift boat can accommodate up to 2 clients at a time, making it a fantastic option for larger groups. If you've also booked our jet boat fishing experience, we can include the drift boat for 2 clients in the same time slot.
Don't worry if you're new to fishing, as no prior experience is required for this trip. Our experienced guide will provide all the necessary equipment for the day. Just remember to bring your own NZ fishing license. We offer both full day and half day drift boat experiences, with prices starting at $1895 for a full day trip for up to 2 people.
Curious about the Upper Waiau Fishery? Here are some frequently asked questions. Unlike other rivers, the Upper Waiau Fishery is not easily accessed by walking due to its high terraced sides and dense bush. That's why we use boats to explore this river, which also means there's less fishing pressure compared to other rivers. You won't have to worry about crowded fishing spots or conflicts with other guides or anglers. Instead, you'll be able to peacefully move along the 28 km length of the river in our drift boat and enjoy a serene fishing experience.
One of the perks of fishing on the Waiau River is its proximity to Te Anau. It's just a 5-minute drive away, allowing you to maximise your fishing time. On a half day trip, most clients get at least 4–5 hours of actual fishing time, a significant improvement compared to spending time travelling to and from rivers and walking between pools. Rest assured, you'll have plenty of time to spot and catch fish.
The Waiau River offers a wide range of fishing styles to suit different preferences. Whether you're a fan of spin fishing, fly-fishing, or drift fishing, there's something for everyone. Experienced anglers can take on challenging waters and target big browns in the backwaters, while newcomers can try their hand at catching active rainbows in the fast water. Our guides are highly knowledgeable about the river and can accommodate all skill levels and fishing styles.
What sets the Waiau River apart from others is its consistent water level and clarity. As a Class 1 tailwater fishery controlled by the Lake Te Anau Dam, the Waiau River is not significantly affected by rainfall. This means you can fish in all weather conditions and book your trip far in advance with peace of mind. Even if other rivers in the region are blown out, the upper Waiau remains fishable by boat.
Our guides have an unparalleled understanding of the Waiau River, spending every day on it during the summer. We are proud to be one of the few operators in New Zealand running drift boats, and our drift boat experience is highly sought after. Booking slots tend to fill up well in advance, so we recommend securing your desired dates early.
Please note that our prices do not include fishing licenses. All clients wishing to fish will need a valid New Zealand Fishing License from Fish and Game. You can conveniently purchase licenses online from the Fish and Game Website. For further information and pricing on Non-Resident Angler Licenses and Resident Angler Licenses, visit their website.
