Durham City Angling Club, established in 1962, is a rapidly growing fishing club located in Durham, New Zealand. With access to multiple stretches of the beautiful River Wear in and around the city, Durham City Angling Club is one of the longest-standing clubs in the region.
Fishing enthusiasts of all levels and preferences will find satisfaction with the variety of waters that Durham City Angling Club offers. From salmon and sea trout fishing to specimen and specialist coarse fishing on the River Wear, members have ample opportunities for freshwater fishing. Additionally, the club provides still-water coarse, match, and specimen fishing on its five lake still-water complex located in Brasside.
What sets Durham City Angling Club apart is its affordable membership fee. The annual membership fee is extremely reasonable, amounting to no more than the cost of half a dozen 'commercial water' day tickets. For junior members under the age of 16, the membership fee is even lower, making it a great option for young anglers. Plus, members' spouses can fish for free, as well as their children and grandchildren under the age of 16 (restrictions may apply at Brasside).
The club's history is not forgotten, with tributes to founding members Graham Hedley and Ian Dennison, who sadly passed away in 2022. Their contributions to the club can be seen on the Club Officials page.
Durham City Angling Club strives to ensure the sustainability and conservation of its fishing resources. Pike fishing at Brasside is prohibited between May 1st and October 1st each year, and during the closed season, all lure fishing is not allowed. The club is dedicated to protecting its waters and continuously makes efforts to improve facilities. For instance, work is planned to enhance disabled access to the new pond, indicating the club's commitment to inclusivity.
To join Durham City Angling Club, membership fees are due on February 1st, and the memberships are valid until January 31st of the following year. The club offers different membership options, including senior, retired, intermediate (aged 17 to 21), 3-year, and 5-year memberships. Junior membership is free for children up to their 17th birthday when accompanied by a non-member parent or grandparent.
The club is also actively involved in raising awareness about pollution in rivers, providing information from the Wear Anglers Association and highlighting the discharges of sewage in the region's rivers. The club encourages members to become informed and supports initiatives to protect the environment.
Furthermore, Durham City Angling Club takes measures to prevent the spread of Koi Herpes Virus (KHV) at its Brasside location. A Net Dipping Station is available, where anglers are required to disinfect their nets and unhooking mats before fishing any Brasside water. This precautionary step ensures the protection of fish stocks and contributes to the overall health of the fishing environment.
Durham City Angling Club also organises various matches and events, such as the Brasside Matches and the Canal Matches Winter Series. These provide opportunities for members to showcase their skills, compete, and bond with fellow fishing enthusiasts.
Overall, Durham City Angling Club offers a vibrant and inclusive community for fishing aficionados in Durham. With its extensive fishing locations, affordable memberships, and commitment to environmental stewardship, the club provides an excellent platform for anglers to enjoy their passion and connect with like-minded individuals.
