Development As a participant in the Kiwi Sprocket Rocket programme, children will learn the basics of BMX riding, including balance, cornering, and jumping. The programme is run by qualified coaches in a safe and fun environment, ensuring that all participants have the opportunity to progress their skills at their own pace. Sprocket Rocket sessions are held regularly at East City BMX, allowing children to engage with the sport and develop their biking abilities.

In addition to the Kiwi Sprocket Rocket programme, East City BMX offers a range of training groups for riders of all ages and abilities. From beginners who are just getting their balance, to more experienced riders preparing for domestic and international competitions, the club provides comprehensive coaching and support. With a team of enthusiastic coaches and an inclusive atmosphere, East City BMX is committed to helping riders reach their full potential.

Throughout the main season, which runs from October to April, East City BMX offers a variety of club activities. These include training sessions every Monday, introductory lessons every Tuesday at 5:30pm, and casual club racing and BBQs every Wednesday from 6pm. Club nights are free for East City BMX club members, and non-members are welcome to participate for a small fee. Racing is held in motos, where riders of similar age are grouped together, fostering a friendly and fun atmosphere.

To participate in races, riders need to obtain a BMX NZ Licence. These licences are issued nationally through BMX NZ and are only valid for BMX events. Club members can also take advantage of the generous support from local sponsors, such as St Johns Butchery, who provide a barbecue during club nights. Additionally, East City BMX offers a tuck shop where riders can refuel with snacks and drinks to keep their energy levels up.

East City BMX prides itself on being a family-friendly club with a supportive community. Established in 1980, the club has had numerous NZ Champions over the years and continues to welcome new members. The track at St Johns is always open for riders to practise, as long as the surface is dry. All that is required is a bike in good working condition, a helmet, long pants, a long-sleeve shirt, and gloves.

For those who want to try out the sport before committing, East City BMX also offers rental services for full-face helmets and gloves.
