Eastleigh Self Defence Association is a martial arts school located in Eastleigh, New Zealand. As a relaxed and friendly club, Eastleigh Self Defence welcomes beginners with open arms. The first session is free, allowing everyone the opportunity to try out the classes.
The primary focus of Eastleigh Self Defence is self-defence and Ju Jitsu. Ju Jitsu is a traditional Japanese martial art that is practised worldwide, with different variations in style and focus depending on the instructor. However, the common teaching strategy involves redirecting and utilising an attacker's force against them, which is the essence of 'Ju'. 'Jitsu' refers to the techniques and methods employed in the practise.
Steve Barker is the chief instructor at Eastleigh Self Defence, holding a 4th Dan in Japanese Ju-Jitsu. Under his guidance, students learn a practical style of Jujitsu that equips them with the necessary skills to effectively defend themselves in hostile situations. The main objective in any confrontation is to avoid physical violence, whether through maintaining awareness and avoiding dangerous situations, or through verbal de-escalation techniques. However, in situations where physical defence is necessary, students are taught a range of striking techniques, throws, takedowns, joint manipulation, and ground fighting.
The teachings at Eastleigh Self Defence follow a syllabus that is divided into 8 stages, or grades, starting from white belt and progressing to black belt. Regular grading assessments are conducted, accommodating each student's individual progress. Regardless of fitness level or initial skill, everyone is encouraged to train at their own pace, with the emphasis on adapting techniques to suit their individual abilities.
The ultimate goal of martial arts, as famously stated by Miyamoto Musashi, is to never have to use them. Eastleigh Self Defence not only focuses on physical training but also on instilling discipline, self-control, and developing a strong character in its students.
