The Eastmoor Angling Club is a fishing club located in Wakefield, New Zealand. The club was re-launched in 2001 with the aim of promoting fishing to people of all ages and bringing communities together. The club is situated on land that was previously a colliery site at the back of the estate.
The club founders, Ron Halliday, Bruce Woodcock, and David Land, were instrumental in clearing and re-stocking the River Calder, which stretches between the railway bridge on Linton Road and the lock. The club offers a yearly membership fee of 10 for anyone above 18 years old, while individuals under 18 can join for free. The Eastmoor Angling Club enforces a set of rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable fishing experience for all members. Each angler must hold their own Eastmoor Angling Club Licence as well as a valid Environment Agency rod licence for individuals aged 12 and over. Bailiffs may conduct licence checks, so it is important for anglers to carry their licences with them when fishing. Junior anglers below the age of 14 must always be accompanied by an adult.
Some club rules include no wading due to safety issues, proper disposal of waste, and parking cars in designated areas to avoid blocking gates or walkways. It is also emphasised that all fish caught must be returned to the club waters and no transferring of fish is allowed. Fish care is taken seriously, with the use of unhooking mats, adequate landing nets, and carp care kits when fishing for specific species.
While fishing at the club's waters, members and visitors are responsible for their own safety, and the club and Wakefield and District Council accept no liability for any injury, accident, or loss of property. The club's committee reserves the right to amend rules when necessary, and any changes are announced at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
One of the main fishing spots offered by the Eastmoor Angling Club is the River Train Bridge stretch, which includes the area from the Train Bridge to the Blue Bridge, nearside only. This stretch can be accessed through the gate on the right near Neil Fox Way, with parking available directly behind the pegs. There are 13 pegs with platforms to choose from, including a disabled anglers' peg. Anglers can also fish on the concrete bank near the lock keepers, which has steps for easy access.
A variety of fish species can be caught in this stretch, including perch, roach, rudd, dace, bleak, chub, bream, carp, eel, pike, and seasonal trout. Anglers should keep an eye out for walkers and cyclists on the path behind, especially when using a pole. The River Train Bridge stretch is closed from 15th March to 15th June.
