East Yorkshire Canoe Club, also known as EYCC, is a volunteer-run club located in the village of North Cave, East Yorkshire. Established in 1973 as Hull & District Canoe Club, it is a thriving and active club with over 100 members of all ages and abilities, maintaining a balanced female-to-male member ratio. The club is affiliated with British Canoeing and offers full coaching through their programmes.
Membership at EYCC offers numerous benefits, including reduced pond fees, free use of equipment during pond sessions, access to club trips, and the ability to hire equipment for personal use. The club's annual membership fees are among the lowest around, providing great value for money. Family membership is priced at 44, while senior and junior memberships are priced at 32 and 18 respectively. Taster sessions can be taken by non-members for a nominal fee, allowing individuals to experience the club before committing to membership.
The club's pond sessions take place on most Saturday mornings, from 10 am to 12 pm, at a private pond on the outskirts of North Cave. During the summer months, Wednesday evening sessions are also available. It is important to note that the pond and its surrounding land are privately owned, emphasising the need for respect and adherence to club rules and regulations.
Safety is a priority at EYCC. To participate in club activities, individuals must be at least 8 years old, able to swim unassisted for 50 metres, and have permission from their parents or guardians if under 16. Children under 16 should not be left at the pond without parental supervision. Membership approval by the club committee is required for all applicants.
When attending pond sessions, it is advisable to bring a towel and a spare set of clothes, as getting wet is likely. Wearing warm clothing, a cagoule (rain jacket), and securing shoelaces away are recommended for protection against wind and water. The club provides a full range of kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, paddles, spray decks, and cagoules for members to use during pond sessions.
In line with Government and British Canoeing guidelines, booking onto pond sessions and club trips is done via Messenger groups to manage and organise participants effectively. Each individual is responsible for following the latest health regulations set by the government.
EYCC prides itself on its inclusive and social atmosphere. With a full calendar of events throughout the year, the club offers activities and trips suitable for all skill levels. Beyond paddling disciplines, the club hosts social events to cater to non-paddling family members, ensuring a sense of community and camaraderie.
