Edinburgh Northern Rugby Football Club (ENRFC) is a historic rugby club based in Edinburgh. Founded in 1920, the club aims to develop the game of rugby in the area and has become an integral part of the local rugby community. The name “Edinburgh Northern” was either derived geographically or from the location of the club's initial meeting at the Northern Bar on Howard Place.
In its early years, ENRFC played its home games at various grounds including Warriston Park, Canal Field, Fettes College, and Murrayfield. However, in 1926, the club settled at its current home ground in Inverleith Park. The club renovated and rented a post-war delousing facility at the west entrance of Inverleith Park, which has undergone upgrades and is still in use today.
ENRFC is known for hosting Scotland's largest annual 7's competition, which attracts teams from all over the country. The club is located in Inverleith Park, just off East Fettes Avenue, and consists of three teams – the 1st XV, the 2nd XV, and The Gents, a veterans' team for players over 35.
To celebrate its centenary, ENRFC has a rich and illustrious history that stretches back to its founding. Articles written by long-serving members in the club's Golden Jubilee publication shed light on the club's early years. The late Tom Henderson and renowned member Bernie Lodge recount the club's nomadic existence as it moved from one venue to another in search of a permanent home. The club faced challenges such as limited changing facilities, but its success attracted attention and by the mid-1920s, ENRFC had to restrict its membership.
Despite the disruptions caused by World War II, ENRFC continued to thrive as a few pre-1939 stalwarts kept the club alive. The war brought a temporary halt to junior rugby, but the club persevered.
ENRFC welcomes players of all backgrounds and skill levels. To get involved, interested individuals can sign up through the club's team management tool, Pitchero, or by getting in touch via Facebook, Twitter, or email. Whether you are a seasoned player or new to the sport, ENRFC provides an inclusive and supportive environment for all rugby enthusiasts.
