The history of Uechi-Ryu traces back to its founder, Kanbun Uechi, born on May 5th, 1877, in Izumi, Okinawa. In 1897, Kanbun travelled to China, where he studied a Kung fu style called Pangai-noon, which incorporated the characteristics and movements of animals like the tiger, crane, and dragon. Kanbun returned to Okinawa in 1910 and taught his style until his passing in 1948.
The Uechi-Ryu Karate system has evolved over the years, with Kanei Uechi, Kanbun's son, taking over the leadership and later passing it on to his eldest son, Kamei Uechi. Since then, many high-ranked black belt members have formed the Okinawa Karate-Do Association, adding new kata, bunkai, and kumites to enrich the system.
In alignment with its parent association in Okinawa, Japan, The Okinawa Karate Association U. K. is affiliated with the Okinawa Karate-Do Association. This affiliation ensures that the Essex Group of Uechi-Ryu Karate Clubs adheres to the traditional teachings and practises of Uechi-Ryu Karate.
Whether an individual is seeking to learn self-defence, improve fitness, or build confidence, the Essex Group of Uechi-Ryu Karate Clubs offers a welcoming and inclusive environment for individuals of all ages and abilities. Joining their classes provides an opportunity to learn a traditional martial art form with experienced instructors and a supportive community.
