Falmouth Aikido offers classes for all ages and experience levels, welcoming beginners and advanced practitioners alike. The club is dedicated to preserving and promoting the teachings of O'Sensei and Saito sensei, ensuring students receive authentic and high-quality training in traditional aikido techniques.
In each class, students will learn throwing, joint-locking, and pinning techniques, as well as training with traditional Japanese weapons such as the sword, staff, and knife. The emphasis is not on brute strength or competition, but rather on developing relaxed power and utilising the energy of opponents to gain control or neutralise attacks.
Apart from physical fitness, aikido training at Falmouth Aikido also fosters personal development, mental resilience, and spiritual growth. Falmouth Aikido practises the 'Iwama-style' of aikido, which has a direct lineage to O'Sensei through Morihiro Saito sensei. The club is affiliated with the California Aikido Association (Aikikai) under the direct supervision of Patricia Hendricks Shihan, who holds the rank of 7th Dan. Additionally, Falmouth Aikido is a member of the British Martial Arts and Boxing Association, ensuring the highest standards of training and professionalism.
The founder of aikido, Morihei Ueshiba (O'Sensei), dedicated his life to developing and perfecting the techniques and philosophy of aikido. His teachings were passed down to Morihiro Saito sensei, who became one of the top instructors in the Aikikai system. Saito sensei trained extensively with O'Sensei and was instrumental in preserving and promoting the authenticity of aikido techniques. His teachings continue to be upheld by Patricia Hendricks Shihan and practised at Falmouth Aikido.
