Promote the development of high-quality, well-run sports clubs and organisations in Glasgow. Glasgow City Basketball Club has achieved this accreditation, demonstrating their commitment to providing a safe, inclusive, and well-structured environment for basketball enthusiasts of all ages and abilities.
Founded in 1982 by James Mick McKechnie and Willie Cameron, Glasgow City Basketball Club aims to provide opportunities for everyone, regardless of age, gender, socio-economic background, or disability, to participate in basketball at their chosen level of performance. Operating in the poorest postcodes in the country, the club strives to use the power of performance basketball to create a positive life-changing impact on the youth and communities in the East End of Glasgow.
Throughout the years, Glasgow City Basketball Club has enjoyed several names, including St Mungos FP, G. E. A. R.
, East End Brightsiders, Glasgow Sports Division, and Glasgow D2, as the club attracted sponsorship and support from the local authority. Since its formation, the club has won an impressive 22 national titles across all age groups, from U16 girls to senior men. Furthermore, they have developed numerous young individuals both on and off the court, supporting their progress to collegiate-level basketball, further education, national team performance, professional sport, and even employment opportunities, where social exclusion may have been more likely without the club's intervention.
The club takes great pride in having produced countless international players who have represented their country at all levels, from under 12s to senior level, for both males and females. Glasgow City Basketball Club continues to provide opportunities for all young people, their parents/guardians, and volunteers to be involved. The club fosters a culture of fun participation, sportsmanship, and camaraderie, welcoming anyone interested in getting involved in the sport, as long as they respect the other members, teams, and officials who support the game.
Glasgow City Basketball Club is dedicated to evolving and building for the future, constantly striving to enhance the experience for their athletes. Athletes have the opportunity to train for up to eight hours a week, with two-hour individual skill development sessions and two-hour team training sessions on offer. The club also provides additional training in primary and secondary schools. With opportunities to compete in regional development leagues, Glasgow leagues, national development leagues, Scottish basketball championship Division two, Strathclyde League, and Scottish basketball championship Division One, Glasgow City Basketball Club is well-known for its ability to quicken progress and develop players in an enjoyable and lasting way.
The club maintains a strong and active partnership with SportScotland and BasketballScotland. Through this partnership, a Community Development Officer has been appointed to coordinate with local primary and secondary schools, offering basketball sessions to encourage participation and increase club membership. This creates a development pathway from grassroots all the way through to performance level.
In recognition of their commitment to excellence, Glasgow City Basketball Club has achieved Glasgow Sport (GS) Clubmark accreditation. The GS Clubmark is an accreditation scheme that aims to recognise, reward, and promote the development of high-quality and well-run sports clubs and organisations in Glasgow. This accreditation further highlights the club's dedication to providing a safe and inclusive environment for basketball enthusiasts in the city.
