Formation of the Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Association Singapore (GRKAS) in 2006 with the aim of promoting authentic and traditional martial arts in Singapore. Under the leadership of Sanny Yap Sensei, who has been practising Karate since the 70s, GRKAS continues to uphold the values of Goju-Ryu Karate-Do.
At GRKAS, students are not only taught the physical techniques of Karate but also the mental discipline and values that come with it. Through regular training, students gain confidence, discipline, and self-defence knowledge. The curriculum at GRKAS incorporates both circular and linear movements, combining hard striking attacks with softer open-hand blocking techniques.
The grading system at GRKAS allows students to track their progress and level of knowledge, skill, and spirit. Colour belts are worn during training to indicate the student's level to instructors and training partners. Classes are conducted in various community centres and private schools, with the honbu dojo located at Kebun Baru Community Club.
GRKAS also organises events and seminars for its members, such as kata seminars conducted by senior sensei from Japan. These events provide members with the opportunity to further their learning and connect with other Karate practitioners. With a rich history dating back to 1968, GRKAS continues to uphold the traditions of Goju-Ryu Karate-Do in Singapore and produce talented martial artists who represent the association in national and international competitions.
