Gotts Park Golf Club, situated three miles west of Leeds City Centre in the historic Gotts Park Mansion House, is a notable spot for golf enthusiasts. This mansion, once known as Armley House, was bought by Benjamin Gott in 1812 for his mother-in-law. After her passing, Benjamin had the mansion rebuilt in a mock Grecian villa style, with Sir Robert Smirke overseeing the redesign. Smirke's other significant projects, including the British Museum in London, share similarities with Gotts Park.
The mansion, surrounded by landscaped gardens designed by Humphrey Repton, remained in the Gott family until the early 1900s. Post-World War I, the Mansion House briefly served as a hospital, hints of which can still be seen in the cellar. In 1928, Wade's Charity acquired the building and grounds, leasing them to Leeds City Council for 999 years. The agreement ensured the grounds would remain a leisure space for the people of Leeds.
On April 8, 1933, Gotts Park Golf Club opened its first nine holes to the public, thanks to Thos. R. Trigg, the director of parks, and Colin Robertson, a well-known public figure. The course later expanded to 18 holes under their stewardship.
Today, the club offers golfers of all skill levels an enjoyable and challenging experience, a testament to their vision.
