Great Torrington Bowling Club

Great Torrington Bowling Club is an active and friendly sports club located in rural North Devon, just a short distance from the centre of Great Torrington. Situated on Castle Hill in the old castle grounds, the club offers panoramic views overlooking the Torridge valley below. Founded during the English Civil War in 1645, Great Torrington Bowling Club is believed to be the third-oldest club in England.

The club's facilities have evolved over the years. Originally, the changing room was located in the gazebo in the corner of the ground, but it was later replaced with a permanent brick building. The club also boasts an extension called Crocker Bar, named after a club member who was a local builder. In 2004/05, further extensions were built to accommodate proper changing rooms and toilets for both men and women.

During the outdoor season, which runs from mid-April until the end of September, the club plays the game of Lawn Bowls. As a member of Bowls Devon Section One, Great Torrington Bowling Club competes in friendly matches against other clubs from Devon and North Cornwall, as well as welcoming clubs from afar on tour in North Devon. The club also takes part in various competitions such as the Devon County Trophy, the Foxlands, Top Club, North Devon triple league, and North Devon over sixties league for men, and the Ladies North Devon Triple League and the 86 Shield competitions for women.

Prospective members are always welcome at Great Torrington Bowling Club, and they have the opportunity to be introduced to the sport of bowls. The green is normally in use most afternoons and evenings by club members, who ensure that all visitors feel welcomed. Additionally, the club holds a club night every Monday at 6:30pm from the second Monday in May for both new and established members to play.

During the indoor season, which runs from the first of October until the end of March, the club moves indoors and plays Short Mat Bowls on two mats. Great Torrington Bowling Club has three teams entered in the North Devon and North Cornwall evening triples league, as well as three teams in the afternoon triples league. The club is open for players to have practise roll-ups throughout the day, with main sessions in the afternoon starting at 2pm and in the evening at 7:30pm. Visitors are welcome on Mondays, with club members available to provide assistance and make them feel at home.
