Green Island Rugby Football Club

The Green Island Rugby Football Club, also known as “The Grizzlies,” is a community-based suburban club located in Dunedin, New Zealand. Established in 1884, the club is under the guidance of the Metropolitan Committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union. The club's colours are green, gold, and black, and its home ground is Miller Park in Abbotsford, where it has been since 1921.

In 2023, the club is proud to field five senior teams, including leading, premier Development, Women, Senior, and Championship Colts. Additionally, the club hosts over 24 junior teams ranging from U5 to U13 ages, as well as three girls teams, making it the biggest Junior Rugby Football Club in Otago and one of the largest in the South Island. The club experiences incredible crowds for their weekly prize givings and club events, creating a vibrant atmosphere. One unique feature of the club is their mascot, “Claws,” the Grizzly Bear.

Green Island Rugby Club is fortunate to have strong support from local sponsors and benefactors that contribute financially to the club's operations. The club is also the most followed community rugby club in Dunedin and Otago, with over 4,000 people following their Facebook page.

Recent years have seen extensive facility upgrades to the clubhouse, including a new commercial-grade kitchen, improved toilets, an outdoor seating area, upgraded sound systems, and a new gym. These facilities are not only used by the club but also by the wider community for various events such as weddings, birthdays, and corporate functions.

The club is run by a dedicated group of volunteers who ensure its smooth operation. The on-field coaching and management are of high quality, supported by a management committee composed of community-focused individuals with business acumen. The club is financially stable and has a strong membership base of over 1,000 members, including players, honorary life members, sponsors, and officials.
