Groovy Grannies Walking Group

The Groovy Grannies Walking Group is a lively sports club located in Canberra, Australia. Led by the enthusiastic organiser, Frances, the Groovy Grannies Walking Group meets twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:00 am. The group consists of 39 members who gather at the designated meeting point, the Kippax Library in the Kippax Shopping Centre in Holt. From there, they embark on a 45-60-minute walk, providing a moderate pace that caters to the abilities and preferences of all participants.

While the Groovy Grannies Walking Group is not dog or pram/wheelchair-friendly, it offers a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where members can connect, support each other, and build lasting friendships. By walking together, they not only improve their physical fitness but also enjoy the mental and emotional benefits of being part of a like-minded community.

As a club proudly supported by the National Heart Foundation of Australia, the Groovy Grannies Walking Group recognises the incredible health advantages of regular physical activity. Walking for an average of 30 minutes a day has been proven to lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes by 30 to 40 percent. Additionally, it helps manage weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol, reduces the risk of certain cancers, maintains bone density, and improves balance and coordination.

Maria, a group walker, shares her inspiring story of how she overcame obesity, diabetes, and blood pressure problems through walking. Starting with just 5,000 steps a day, she gradually increased her daily steps to an impressive 15,000. As a result, she is no longer diabetic and has resolved her blood pressure issues.
