Experience the beauty of nature with students by booking a guided school program with Prince Albert National Park's Canoeing club. Delivered by Parks Canada interpreters, these programs aim to introduce or reconnect students to the land and its natural wonders. The spring programming will run from May 27 to June 21, 2024, with bookings open between April 22 and May 3, 2024. Fall programming will take place from September 5 to September 27, 2024, with bookings accepted from April 15 to September 27, 2024. All programs are available in both French and English.
One of the exciting activities offered is a dip-netting experience on the shore of Waskesiu Lake. Students will walk to the breakwater and learn about the lake's Cree origins before using dip nets to catch underwater creatures, providing an interactive lesson on species diversity and predator-prey relationships. Another engaging program is the guided scavenger hunt in the forest community near the Waskesiu River, where students will use all their senses to explore the area and learn about traditional plant uses.
For older students (ages 7 to 12), there is a river study program that involves investigating macroinvertebrates in the water using special tools like dip nets and aqua scopes. These hands-on experiences aim to teach students about river ecosystems, species diversity, and the importance of these species to the environment.
Additionally, guided hikes are available depending on trail conditions, allowing students to explore and reconnect with the natural communities of the park. The Nature Centre offers self-guided displays on the park's natural and cultural history, providing an educational opportunity for all ages.
School groups can also explore the park at their own pace, taking advantage of the short trails, scenic viewpoints, and picnic areas. Park entry is free for students, teachers, chaperones, and bus drivers as long as more than half the group is 17 years of age or younger. Commercial rates apply to post-secondary groups.
