Guildford Judo Club, located in Surbiton, is a well-established club with nearly 20 years of coaching experience. Recognised as an elite provider by the British Judo Association, the club is committed to making Judo a fun, safe, and confidence-boosting sport.
Judo is a martial art based on the ancient art of Jiu-Jitsu. It focuses on self-defence techniques that allow individuals to counter strength and size with leverage, balance, and a knowledge of anatomy. At Guildford Judo Club, classes are centred around this ethos, ensuring that students not only learn valuable self-defence skills but also have an enjoyable and empowering experience.
The club offers classes for all ages and abilities, with sessions held at both the Guildford Spectrum and the Tolworth Recreation Centre. Guildford classes take place every Saturday morning at the Guildford Spectrum, Parkway, while Tolworth classes are held every Friday evening at the Tolworth Recreation Centre.
To ensure a holistic learning experience, Guildford Judo Club works in association with local schools to provide comprehensive Judo training to interested individuals. The club follows a grading syllabus approved by the British Judo Association, allowing students to progress in rank and belt colour, demonstrating an increase in skill and knowledge.
Children aged 5–7 years, or school years 1-3, follow the Sho grading scheme. Sho grades start with movement, gymnastics, and basic skills, gradually incorporating elements from the Mon grading scheme. Sho grades are free for students in this age group.
For students aged 8+ years or school years 4+, the Mon grading scheme is followed. Mon, meaning “gate” in Japanese, represents the progression through belts, starting from white and culminating in the coveted black belt. Mon gradings take place twice a year, and students typically advance by one Mon at a time. The cost for Mon gradings is 6.
00.
Joining the British Judo Association is a requirement for students to participate in gradings. This membership not only provides a transferable grade recognised internationally but also allows students who are interested in competing to start their competitive journey.
Guildford Judo Club is dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing environment for individuals to learn and develop their Judo skills. With experienced coaches and a focus on building confidence and self-defence abilities, the club offers a rewarding experience for students of all ages and abilities.
